Overnight lane reductions will take place Sept. 7 through December on Interstate 80 east of Sparks as the Nevada Department of Transportation removes roadside litter and conducts preliminary geotechnical soil surveys in advance of future I-80 widening between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway.
When: Sept. 7 through Dec. 2025
Westbound I-80 lane reductions: 8p.m.-5:30a.m.
Eastbound I-80 lane reductions: 7:30p.m.-4a.m.
What: Single lane closures on sections of I-80 and interchanges between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway. Lane closures will be up to two miles in length, and will alternate on sections of eastbound and westbound I-80.
Motorists are advised to leave extra travel time and anticipate travel delays when driving through the area.
The work schedule is subject to change.
Lane closures on this geographically-confined corridor can slow traffic traveling to and from the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and other areas. NDOT is performing the work during overnight hours to reduce impact to peak daytime commute and travel hours.
During the lane reductions, NDOT will perform two different tasks to improve the interstate for the nearly 50,000 drivers who travel it every day:
• Conduct preliminary geotechnical soil surveys in advance of future I-80 widening between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway
• Remove roadside litter
Geotechnical Soil Surveys For Future Roadway Widening
Traffic has increased more than 70 percent over the past ten years. Beginning as early as 2027, NDOT plans to widen and improve I-80 between Vista Boulevard and the State Route 439 (USA Parkway) interchange.
The future widening requires extensive geotechnical engineering due to steep slopes and rock formations bordering the interstate. The geotechnical surveys will provide data on soil and rock features to help finalize engineering designs for the future interstate widening.
Interstate widening and improvements are projected to cut total crash rates by approximately 20 percent when compared to not improving the interstate.
Roadside Litter Removal
NDOT highway maintenance staff perform more than 75 different road work tasks, from roadway resurfacing and drainage repairs to snow removal and incident response. Five NDOT highway maintenance crews from across the region will work together to remove roadside litter in the area.
Uncovered trash and haul loads blown from the back of vehicles can find their way to roads and public spaces. NDOT reminds motorists to secure all items in their vehicle. Drivers can be fined for unlawful roadside littering.
