The Nevada Department of Transportation will host a Sept. 23 virtual open house to provide information and gather public input regarding the Statewide Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan, emphasizing rural transit services and needs.

Public, private and non-profit transportation providers, human service agencies and citizens are welcome to attend to learn about the Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan and share feedback about access to local and regional transit resources.

Each year, NDOT receives Federal Transit Administration funding to assist in meeting the transportation needs of older adults and people with disabilities living in rural areas.

The plan identifies challenges and unmet passenger transportation needs for older adults and individuals with disabilities living in rural Nevada, including needs for public transportation to work, medical appointments, entertainment and more. The plan helps guide transit prioritization and identify strategies to meet future transit needs across the state.

“Particularly in rural areas of Nevada, those who cannot transport themselves must rely on others, such as family, friends or transit services, to reach employment, medical services, grocery stores and more,” NDOT transportation planner Laurel Brock-Kline explained. “Public feedback will help us prioritize the most needed rural transit access across Nevada.”

Public feedback will be incorporated into a draft plan, which will be available online for public comment prior to the plan’s finalization.
