NDOT To Launch Project to Replace Interstate 80 Bridges West of Reno

Post Date:04/02/2026 12:37 PM
Traffic shifts and speed reductions will begin April 6 on Interstate 80 directly west of Reno as the Nevada Department of Transportation launches a multi-year project to replace seven interstate bridges.

Beginning April 6 through spring 2028, drivers will see the following traffic switches and overnight lane reductions between I-80 exits 4-7 (Mae Anne Avenue to Boomtown).
Initial Week of Construction- April 6-10
The initial week of construction will primarily include interstate lanes being shifted to the outside shoulder and installation of roadside construction barrier rail.
• At least two interstate lanes will remain open in each direction during daytime hours.
• Interstate lanes will periodically be reduced to one lane in each direction between 8 p.m. - 6 a.m. weekdays.
• Drivers should drive attentively and anticipate overnight speed reductions, ongoing interstate lane shifts and changing traffic control.

Continuing Interstate Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions- April 11 through Spring 2028
From mid-April through spring 2028, drivers will see the following traffic switches between I-80 exits 4-7 (Mae Anne Avenue to Boomtown).
• At least two interstate lanes will remain open in each direction during daytime hours.
• Interstate lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 8 p.m. - 6 a.m. weekdays.
• Traffic shifts and crossovers will be in place at the Mae Anne Avenue overpass and in the Mogul area, routing traffic around areas of active bridge demolition and reconstruction.
• Interstate speed limits will be reduced to 55mph in work zones.
• Intermittent side street and brief interstate detours will take place as individual sections of bridge are removed. Advance notice will be given, and daytime traffic will still be able to utilize interstate lanes.
• Interstate drivers can anticipate moderate travel delays through the work zone.
• Construction schedule is weather permitting and subject to change.

Project Overview

NDOT is replacing seven bridges from west of Robb Drive to the Garson Road overpass in Verdi:

• I-80 over Mae Anne Avenue, west of Robb Drive
• I-80 over Mogul Road
• I-80 over Fourth Street, in Lawton area
• Garson Road overpass over I-80, Verdi

The bridges are approximately 60 years of age. After exceeding their originally anticipated 50-year lifespan, the heavily-traveled bridges are being replaced before age, heavy vehicle travel and weather-related impacts make them obsolete. While carrying the same number of lanes, the new bridges will feature a slightly wider shoulder for enhanced maneuverability, including during incidents and emergency response. The structures will be constructed with extensive seismic protections to reduce earthquake impacts to the bridges.

On the Garson Road bridge over I-80 at Boomtown, NDOT will construct a barrier-separated shared use path. This separated path can connect to future local pedestrian and pathway projects in the area.

The bridges will be painted with images of water, fish, dragonflies, fly fishermen and other scenes reflecting the Truckee River habitat, compatible with other roadside aesthetics on the interstate corridor. Decorative rock material will also be placed to further reduce slope erosion.

The bridges are being renovated as part of NDOT’s continuing efforts to retrofit older bridges. Nevada bridges have been ranked as the nation’s best for nearly ten years. This project represents an approximate $68 million investment of federal funding to enhance the bridges for the approximately 47,000 who travel the interstate every day. This funding is strictly dedicated to bridge replacement, and is not available for major widening of state or local roadways.

Other longer-span interstate bridges over the Truckee River in the Verdi area will be replaced as part of a separate, future NDOT project.
