Keystone Avenue will be closed underneath Interstate 80 during overnight hours the week of August 30 as part of a continuing Nevada Department of Transportation project to repave and widen the interstate in west Reno.
- Keystone Avenue will be closed to through traffic underneath I-80 as crews paint interchange bridges and retaining walls
- Closures will take place nightly between 8 p.m. - 6 a.m. (evening of Aug. 30 through the morning of Sept. 4)
- I-80/Keystone Avenue ramps will remain open, but drivers will not be able to travel underneath the interstate
- Keystone Avenue underneath I-80 will be open during daytime hours
- Detour routes will be available
- Motorists should plan ahead for moderate travel delays
- Construction schedule is subject to change
Bridge walls at the intersection will be painted a natural tan color, with jackrabbit panels overlaid as part of interstate landscaping portraying wildlife of the area. The existing mural at the underpass will stay.
The painting is part of finishing work on a project to resurface I-80 between McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue. An auxiliary merge lane has also been added on eastbound I-80 between western McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue, providing additional merge opportunities for enhanced traffic safety and mobility.
The project recently reached a milestone, with final interstate paving placed in July. Drivers will continue to see periodic overnight lane and ramp closures for finishing construction.

Interstate Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions
- Speeds are reduced to 55 mph through the work zone.
- Interstate drivers can anticipate moderate travel delays through the work zone.
- At least two interstate lanes will remain open in each direction during daytime hours.
- Interstate lanes will periodically be reduced to a minimum of one lane between 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. weekdays.
- Intermittent overnight ramp closures of the west McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue ramps to I-80 take place Sunday evenings through Friday mornings.
- Construction schedule is subject to change.
- Additional traffic control such as lane reductions may take place on McCarran Boulevard, Keystone Avenue and Stoker Avenue near I-80.
The project will make the following improvements:
- Resurface both directions of I-80 between McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue.
- An auxiliary merge lane will also be added on eastbound I-80 between western McCarran Boulevard and Keystone Avenue, providing additional merge opportunities for enhanced traffic safety and mobility.
- Approximately 8,000 linear feet of sound wall will be added in certain areas to help reduce traffic sound impacts for surrounding neighborhoods.
- Select interstate bridges will also be resurfaced and improved, and the I-80 bridge over Stoker Avenue will be widened.
- Roadside drainage, signage, lighting, landscaping and wrong-way driver detection systems will be enhanced.
