About the Research Program

"Research is the bedrock of innovation."

Introduction

The NDOT Research Program focuses on producing original research that supports the Department's mission of providing a Safe and Connected transportation system for all Nevadans. To accomplish this, the program identifies new transportation research needs and coordinates research projects by contracting with state universities and other research service providers to conduct research in all aspects of transportation. Products from the research program include new devices, analytical tools, materials, improved specifications, improved testing methods, and less tangible concepts like knowledge or guidance.

The program identifies and assists with the development of new technical knowledge with a focus on implementation into common practice. NDOT staff have the opportunity to submit Research Needs Statements (RNS) identifying their specific research needs. Academic researchers and service providers submit proposals to conduct research in response to RNS and department personnel screen and evaluate the proposals to ensure consistency with Departmental goals. Selected projects are submitted to the Research Management Committee and the Federal Highway Administration for final approval. Research is performed with oversight and continous involvement with project champions and the Technical Advisory Panel. Upon completion of a project, researchers submit final reports explaining and detailing the scope of the project, outcomes, and recommendations to the Department.
