I-80 Corridor Coalition

Interstate 80 is one of America’s most vital roadways, stretching 2,900 miles and enabling the movement of people, freight, and billions of dollars in goods across the country each year. Because traffic, weather, and emergencies can arise anywhere along the route, strong communication and collaboration across state lines are essential.

The Coalition brings together transportation and tolling agencies across 11 states, united by a shared commitment to enhancing coordination, communication, and interoperability along the I80 corridor. Through this partnership, the Coalition is helping make travel safer, more reliable, and more efficient for everyone who depends on this critical corridor.

The Vision

The vision is a fully connected, coast to coast transportation network that supports safer travel, more predictable operations, and a stronger national supply chain. To achieve this, the Coalition is coordinating on the advancement of digital infrastructure that helps agencies share timely, reliable information with the traveling public and neighboring states; coordinate operations more efficiently; and respond quickly to weather or emergency events. With these capabilities, a snowstorm in Wyoming could trigger faster alerts in Nebraska, and a truck driver in Ohio could easily access accurate parking information for Indiana.

The coalition aims to improve safety and travel reliability by creating a unified system for sharing real-time transportation information. This will allow partner agencies to automatically share data about weather, incidents and emergencies with one another and the public. By providing consistent alerts and timely information, the coalition will help transportation operators and the traveling public make safer, smarter decisions on the road.

Corridor Communications Roadmap

To turn this vision into reality, the Coalition has launched the I-80 Enhancing Corridor Communications Roadmap, an initiative led by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) in partnership with the I-80 Corridor Coalition and funded by a USDOT SMART Grant.

At the core of this effort is the development of a Corridor Data Exchange. The data exchange is not a single operational system, but a shared framework that enables agencies to exchange critical transportation data—such as roadway conditions, incidents, weather, and truck parking availability—while maintaining individual operational authority. Ultimately, the goal of the Corridor Data Exchange is to enable better information sharing and improved situational awareness for road users and transportation agencies.

Driving Progress Together

The I-80 Corridor Coalition is a partnership of 14 transportation and tolling agencies across 11 states. Through technical working groups and regular coordination, agencies collaborate on initiatives to improve interoperability and data sharing while maintaining their individual operational authority.

In addition to Coalition members, the project engages a broad network of stakeholders, including federal partners, national transportation organizations, other multistate corridors, private data providers, and industry partners.

Timeline and Resources

In 2026, the coalition will focus on developing a unified data exchange platform that serves as the digital backbone for the Coalition.
