Project Overview
Improving Safety and Accessibility Along a Busy Las Vegas Corridor
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is launching the Rainbow Boulevard (SR 595) Pavement Improvement Project with significant enhancements to median safety and mobility along one of Las Vegas’ most heavily traveled corridors. Spanning approximately five miles - from just north of Tropicana Avenue to Silverstream Avenue - the project will focus on pavement improvements, upgraded traffic signals, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) upgrades.
As part of this broader pavement improvement effort, NDOT has identified three key intersections along Rainbow Boulevard - at Nara Vista Way, Via Olivero Way, and Del Rey Avenue - where changes to median access are necessary to address safety concerns. These locations were selected based on traffic data and crash history, and the proposed changes are designed to reduce the risk of collisions and improve traffic flow.
Read the NDOT analysis of crash trends on Rainbow Boulevard (SR 595) from 2018-2022 here.
These safety-driven enhancements have received full support from NDOT’s Traffic Safety and Traffic Operations teams, as well as concurrence from local agencies.
Locations
1. Rainbow Blvd at Nara Vista Way
- Current access: Full access (drivers can make left turns from both directions and cross Rainbow)
- Proposed Change: Median closure – access will be limited to right turns only in and out of Nara Vista Way
- Why: Limiting turning movements at this location will reduce potential crash points and improve overall intersection safety.
New vehicle movement:
2. Rainbow Blvd at Via Olivero Way
- Current Access: Partial or “3/4” access (drivers can make a left turn into Via Olivero from southbound Rainbow, right turns in and out, but no left turns out of Via Olivero)
- Proposed Change: Modify the median to eliminate the northbound left turn into Via Olivero. The southbound left turn will remain.
- Why: Restricting the northbound left reduces high-risk turning movements while preserving access where it is safer and less prone to conflict.
New vehicle movement:
3. Rainbow Blvd at Del Rey Avenue
- Current Access: Full access (drivers can turn left or right in and out, and cross Rainbow)
- Proposed Change: Median closure – access will be restricted to right turns only in and out of Del Rey Avenue
- Why: Full access at this location has led to safety concerns; this change reduces intersection conflict points to improve safety for all roadway users.
New vehicle movements:
