NDOT will install a traffic roundabout on State Route 227 (Lamoille Highway) at Boyd-Kennedy Road in the Elko area.

The approximately 100-foot diameter two-lane traffic roundabout will be larger in size than the existing Lamoille Highway roundabout at nearby Spring Creek and Licht parkways. Buses and freight trucks will be able to drive over the side of the inside concrete median to travel through the roundabout.

The project will also include the following improvements:

  • Pedestrian crosswalks will lead to the multi-use path along the north side of the road, providing additional pedestrian access.
  • Acceleration and deceleration lanes will be installed at Lamoille Highway and Trescartes Avenue, as well as at the entrance to Spring Creek High School, for channelized turns.
  • New LED lighting and advanced roadway signage will provide additional visibility.
  • Landscape artwork will be installed in the roundabout, including metal cutouts of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and mountain lions, along with decorative rock, adapted plants and more. Seeding and decorative concrete will also be installed.
  • When complete, the posted speed limit on Lamoille Highway approaching the new roundabout will be reduced to 45 mph, with an advisory speed of 25 mph through the roundabout.

Traffic Updates

The following traffic changes take place on State Route 227 between Corral Lane and Martin Avenue beginning spring through late summer 2025.

  • SR 227 will be reduced to one lane in each direction 24/7, along with roadside shoulder closures
  • At least one lane will remain open in each direction
  • Periodic side street closures will take place on SR 227 at Boyd Kennedy Road and Trescartes Avenue. No two consecutive intersections will be closed at the same time, and detour routes will be marked.
  • Lane shifts will take place, along with roadside shoulder closures
  • Speeds will be reduced as low as 35 mph in certain sections of the work zone
  • While the majority of travel delays will be minor, drivers can anticipate up to 30-minute

travel delays through the work zone

  • Business access will be maintained during construction
  • Access to the existing roadside shared use path will remain available.
  • Construction schedule is weather permitting and subject to change
  • Drivers should plan ahead and leave extra travel time

Project Benefits

The project will enhance traffic mobility for the approximately 11,000 drivers who travel near the intersection daily.

A one-way circular intersection in which traffic flows around a center island without stop signs or signals, the roundabout is being installed to enhance traffic safety. Because traffic enters and exits through right turns only, the occurrence of severe right-angle crashes in roundabouts is less than in many four-way intersections. Traffic crashes reduced more than 80 percent in the three years following the installation of the Spring Creek Parkway roundabout, compared to the three years prior to installation. Lower speeds, increased traffic capacity and decreased delays, congestion, fuel consumption and air pollution are other roundabout benefits found in many national studies.
